Renovation Update
Spring 2010
What was, for years, an abandoned building on a derelict lot, is finally turning into what we envisioned for the future home of Café au Play - a beautiful space surrounded by green that invites visitors and complements the neighborhood.
With help from Eric Shriner, Josh Lighthipe, David Leach, David Barnom (Fiddlehead Landscape Design), Glen Izer (Mt Hood Construction & Concrete), Portland Nursery and our tireless volunteers, we have completed the landscaping throughout the site. Boulders, stone walls, storm water bioswales, hundreds of native plants and trees, and a lovely backyard patio and sidewalk have transformed the property into a space ready to be enjoyed by adults and children alike.
Thanks to another group of professionals who have generously donated their talents, the old “Drive-Thru Wake Up” sign now beautifully reflects the site’s new identity. Muralists John Early and Laura Bender (Site Painters), sign craftsman Lee Littlewood (Lee’s Better Letters), Daryl Hare (Waco Scaffolding Co), and electrician Traci Sullivan all pitched in to make this happen. Café au Play would also like to recognize Julz Nally and Brian Nally for donating their graphic design work in creating our vibrant new logo.
With a $12,000 grant from the City of Portland's Vision Into Action Coalition program, we have also made significant progress renovating the interior. The walls, floor and utilities are complete; the coffee bar, cabinetry and play area are in progress; and this spring will be dedicated to furnishing the kitchen and seating area and completing all the finishing touches.
